📜 Today's Meditation

James 4:8 contains one of Scripture's most intimate promises — a divine invitation wrapped in a conditional clause. James, writing to Jewish Christians scattered abroad, addressed those who were spiritually restless, torn between the allure of the world and the nearness of God.

The phrase 'double minded' comes from the Greek word dipsychos, literally meaning 'two-souled' — a person whose loyalty is divided, whose heart cannot settle on one master. James does not condemn such people; instead, he calls them to make a decisive movement toward God. And the promise is breathtaking: draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.

During Lent, the early church practiced this nearness through disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving — not as acts of merit, but as ways of clearing the clutter of the self so that God's presence could be more fully known. To cleanse one's hands is to renounce known sin; to purify one's heart is to stop the internal war of allegiances. This Lenten season, what would it look like for you to take one step closer to God today?

🙏 Today's Prayer

Lord, I confess that I have often lived with a divided heart, pulled between the voices of the world and the still, small voice of Your Spirit. Draw me near to You this Lenten season, and help me to draw near to You in return. Cleanse my hands from the sins I cling to, and purify my heart from the double-mindedness that keeps me from fully surrendering to You. Quiet the noise around me so that I may hear Your voice and feel Your nearness. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
