📜 Today's Meditation

Matthew 16:24 presents Jesus' fundamental declaration about the condition of genuine discipleship. Immediately after Peter's confession of Jesus as the Messiah, Jesus foretold His suffering and death. When Peter objected, Jesus rebuked him and made this declaration. To "deny oneself" is not merely about reducing worldly desires; it is a radical invitation to remove "self" from the center of one's life and place Christ in that position.

The phrase "take up his cross" was shocking to His contemporary audience. The cross was Rome's cruelest form of execution, reserved for rebels. Jesus called His disciples not to a comfortable life, but to a commitment that embraces even suffering and shame. Each person's cross is unique—for some it is forgiveness, for others patience, and for still others the surrender of worldly recognition.

Lent invites us to contemplate anew the meaning of the cross. The path to Golgotha that Jesus walked was a path of self-emptying. During this season, we must practice surrendering our desires, our plans, and our sense of security, standing before God's will.

Ask yourself quietly: what must I release? Though that letting go may frighten you, Jesus promises that resurrection life awaits at the end of this path.

🙏 Today's Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I bow before Your word calling me to deny myself and take up my cross. I confess the selfishness and fear within me that obstruct my following You. Grant me courage during this Lenten season to release what I cling to. Believing that the way of the cross is the way of life, help me take one step forward in following You today. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
